Welcome to Emmanuel United Church of Christ

Don’t you just love this beautiful warm spring weather? Better not put away your woolies just yet. It is good weather for March Madness – the NCAA basketball tournament. It feels like basketball weather. I don’t know how many of you watch the games but my blood pressure has gone up just about every game. I was so excited yesterday when Virginia Commonwealth University beat Kansas. What a great game – especially since I was rooting for VCU! Back in the ‘60’s I went to MCV in Richmond before it became a part of VCU.

Looking back reminds me how times change. We live in a changing world. Archie and I were talking about how technology changes so fast – just about daily – and how we are both glad to be getting older so we don’t really have to keep up with 4G and 5G and all that stuff.

But you know what? The Word of God never changes. It stays the same year after year. God is still speaking but God continues to speak the words of love and peace and brother/sisterhood. If we could just get that word out to the world – if we could just get that word out to our neighbors – even to our own families.

I just heard on the radio this morning that this generation is the first generation of parents which have not passed on the Christian faith to their children as was done in years past. How sad that is. How sad it is that school work and sport’s teams are more important, in too many cases, than learning about what God can mean in our children’s lives. Football or baseball or any number of sports may get our children into college but is that the most important thing? If God doesn’t come first in parent’s lives it’s not likely that it will be a priority to the children.
Kids don’t want to go to church so we say “okay”. It’s not okay. Have any of you had to get your children up to go to school? Why does discipline stop when it comes to Sunday morning? We are all familiar with Proverbs 22:6

“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

If you want to read some words from prophecy go to Jeremiah 2. Here is just a sample:

“Look closely. Has this ever happened before, That a nation has traded in its gods for gods that aren’t even close to gods? But my people have traded my Glory for empty god‐dreams and silly god‐schemes.
I’ve wasted my time trying to train your children. They’ve paid no attention to me, ignored my discipline. And you’ve gotten rid of your God‐messengers, treating them like dirt and sweeping them away”

Seems like I’m on a soapbox this morning as I write this but it’s discouraging trying to get a youth group going strong when there are better things to do. They say they are bored in church – so let them come and suggest changes to make it better. You know that I’m all for good change. I’m all for different music if we can get the kids to participate. I just want to see them here. Let’s give it a try.

Easter is almost here. I pray some of you have learned about the Seasons of the Church Year the last few Sundays. This Sunday we will be covering the Lenten Season followed by Pentecost. It is my prayer that you have been concentrating on Lenten disciplines such as prayer and Bible study during the last few weeks. Many of have enjoyed our Wednesday night suppers and services. I look forward to Easter and the many surprises that it brings.

God bless you!

Enter His gates with thanksgiving, And His courtyards with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name. For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting And His faithfulness is to all generations. — Psalm 100:4-5 (NASV)
